THE STORY:

If you're like me and are able to remember back that far, the Sixties were full of Hope and Change. Way before Nobama, John F. Kennedy, who happened to be the First  President BORN in the 20th Century called American's into action starting with his Inaugural Speech in January 1961. Many young people responded by enlisting in the Peace Corp or the Draft. Others resisted the Big Movement for Civil Rights. It was not unusual to hear of cross or church burnings or hear people refer to the term "Generation Gap" to describe the differences between Young and Old. As thousand's of Young Americans were drafted into the Military posters stating "War is not Healthy for Children and Other Living Things" became a statement of the times.....Organized Protests became the norm while some working folks used Boycotts, Sit-in's, Marches and Strikes to bring National Attention to their plight. Music was changing too, as Teenagers chose Folk Music instead of Elvis Presley, and Rhythm & Blues instead of Frank Sinatra. The "British Invasion" started with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones while Television became more successful with Advertiser-Supported programming of Entertainment, News, Sports and Politics. Congress passed the Public Broadcasting Act in 1967 to insure non-commercial programs also got aired as well. You might remember : Muhammad Ali defeating Sonny Liston, Bart Starr leading the Packers to victory over Kansas City (35-10), or "The Muppets Show" featuring creator Jim Henson ( who later died of swallowing pigeon poop in Paris, France after leaving a window open while sleeping ). Or, maybe you remmember Jimi Hendrix and Jose Feliciano in their heyday. Than again, it may take Mini Skirts, Andy Warhol's Campbell Soup Can paintings or Ralph Nadars book "Unsafe at any Speed" to jog your memory. In any event 1966 was definitely a year to remember. Perhaps this is why the 1966 Ford Mustang 2+2 Fastback Coupe and the 'attached memories' are the reason it remains One of the Most Popular Muscle Cars to date.
The Public demanded Economy and Sportiness in transportation... they wanted Handling and Performance all wrapped up in One Great Package. Ford came through with a spectacular car that weighed in under 2500 pounds, carried 4 people and sold new for around $2500 (base model notchback Coupe). The answer was "the New Ford Mustang". Ford never apologized for the 200 cubic inch six cylinder under the hood but, instead offered three more 'upgrade' v8's to choose from. You could order a 2 barrel "C" Code V-8, a 225 hp "A"Code V8 or the "K" Code Cobra Powered 271 hp with 10 to 1 compression. If you penciled-in the "GT" tick on the form you could only choose from an "A" Code or "K" Code motor. Yet, sales figures now show, few people optioned to spend the extra money to get a GT Model. Lee Iacocca knew he had created "a dream of steel and rubber" as the car was an immediate success. The First Year 'estimated sales' hoped for 100,000 but, Ford passed that mark in 1964.... within the first four months.... selling 22,000 the first day. In fact, in just 12 months they sold 417,000. Ford reached another benchmark in 1966 by selling 607,568 Mustangs ( 62.8% were Automatics. 29.1% had Tinted Glass, only 28.9% had power Steering and 17.9 % had the Day/Night Non-Glare Mirror). Incredibly, only 35,698 were Fastback 2+2 Coupes.

Studying History, we feel the reason this car was so popular was :
1. It performed
like a bat out of hell
2. You could literally customize ('build') your NEW Mustang any way you wanted it. Ford offered over 63 options in the early years.
3.
The Ford Mustang became an instant Legend .....outlasting Camaro, Cuda, Chevelle, Oldsmobile, Challenger, Pontiac Firebird and the AMX.
4.
The Ford Mustang is listed as a Certified Milestone Car 1965-1967.
