1967 CHEVROLET CORVETTE STINGRAY CONVERTIBLE -L79
THIS CAR CAME TO US OUT OF
THE PALM BEACHES ...... A REAL 'KNOCK-OUT' BEAUTY FINISHED IN
1967'S MOST
POPULAR CORVETTE COLOR (BY FAR) "GOODWOOD GREEN" WITH WHITE
VINYL BUCKET SEATS AND WHITE SOFT
TOP (ONLY), IT WON N.C.R.S. "TOP FLIGHT" STATUS AND HAS BEEN RELIGIOUSLY
SERVICED BY ONE OF THE TOP CORVETTE SPECIALISTS IN THE SOUTH. THE CARING OWNER
SAW FIT TO SERVICE "ANYTHING THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE" DURING HIS
OWNERSHIP. MOST PEOPLE WOULD CONSIDER THIS A 'DROP DEAD GORGEOUS" VETTE
WITHOUT THE NCRS HISTORY. THIS IS A ' LO-MILE ORIGINAL ' (1909 MILES PER
YEAR) WITH A UNDERCARRIAGE
ANYONE WOULD DEEM CONCOURS ... EQUIPPED WITH
THE HOLY GRAIL (TO US) ENGINE /
TRANSMISSION COMBINATIONS
THE 327/350 "L-79"
WITH MATCHING NUMBERS COMPLIMENTED BY A 4-SPEED AND POSITRACTION.
A BASIC CAR THAT CARRIES THE OPTIONAL WHITEWALL TIRES, TINTED GLASS,
COLORED SOFT-TOP, ORIGINAL
AM/FM RADIO , 'SPEED MINDER' ALARM , 4-SPEED MUNCIE TRANSMISSION, 2 SETS OF RALLY
WHEELS [ ONE WITH ORIGINAL NYLON BIAS PLY FOR SHOWS AND ANOTHER SET W/
MODERN-DRIVING RADIALS]. CHEVROLET SOLD 14, 436 CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE'S IN 1967 BUT,
ONLY 6375 WERE BUILT WITH THE
L-79 OPTION IN
BOTH COUPE AND CONVERTIBLE. TO BOOT, ONLY 4,293
WERE MADE IN THE VERY POPULAR COLOR: 'GOODWOOD GREEN (POLY')
WHICH WAS THE MOST POPULAR COLOR: 19%
OF PRODUCTION WHEN NEW. THEN ,
NARROW DOWN THE FIELD TO ACTUAL MATCHING NUMBER MOTOR WITH BROACH MARKS ON PAD"
AND DESIRABLE COLOR AND YOU ARE
TALKING A CAR THAT IS ONE OF A HANDFUL THAT STILL EXIST.
AFTER SELLING CLASSIC CARS FOR ALMOST 24 YEARS, IN OUR
OPINION, WE CAN'T HELP BUT, GET EXCITED ABOUT ONE PARTICULAR CAR. THE MID-YEAR
VETTE'S STAND HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE ANY OTHER COLLECTIBLE AS
THE MOST
BANG-FOR-THE-BUCK, IN A CLASSIC CAR. THEN, YOU
NARROW IT DOWN TO THE BEST-OF-THOSE AND IT'S
THE 1967 CORVETTE STINGRAY.
IT'S NOT JUST THE TIMELESS BEAUTY OR BEING THE LAST OF THE MID-YEAR
VETTES BUT, PERFORMANCE IN THE ENGINE/ TRANSMISSION COMBINATION THAT MAKES OR
BREAKS GREAT CLASSIC CARS. MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT'S THE COMPATIBILITY WITH THE
DRIVER. THOUGH THERE ARE THOSE THAT LOVE THE BIG BLOCKS, ANY PAST
'MULTIPLE CORVETTE OWNER' WILL TELL YOU "THE SMALL BLOCK 327
CORVETTE'S FOR DRIVABILITY ARE THE WAY TO GO". MAYBE IT'S THE BLEND OF WEIGHT
(3020 LBS) VS. HORSEPOWER (327/350), OR MAYBE, THE 'LAST MODEL' DESIRABILITY AND
GREAT TRANSMISSION (4-SPEED MUNCIE) BUT, IT DEFINITELY MAKES FOR
THE ULTIMATE CLASSIC CORVETTE EVER PRODUCED.
THE SMALL BLOCKS ARE EASIER TO GET PARTS AND BUY GAS FOR (OCTANE) ~ A FIRST
TIME CONSIDERATION IN MANY YEARS~ .... AND THEY HANDLE BETTER- THIS IS A GREAT GARAGE
ASSET FOR ANY COLLECTOR. YOU'LL FIND MID-YEAR VETTES IN ALL PRICE RANGES BUT,
COMMON SENSE WILL TELL YOU, MOST HAVE ONE-PIECE NOSES, HAVE BEEN IN SIGNIFICANT
ACCIDENTS, ENDURED
COLOR & DATA PLATE CHANGES OR HAVE 'STORIES' ATTACHED. THIS ONE
DOESN'T. PRICED ACCORDINGLY, ADD FOR N.C.R.S. DOC'S AND
GENERAL CONDITION REDUCED TO
SALE: $67,950
THE STORY:
1967 was the year of the First Heart Transplant by South
African Christian Barnard. Commonplace today it was considered the
"Story Of The Year" back then. Actress; Julia Roberts was born (
along with 3,520,959 others in the U.S.*) and Carl
Sandberg (Poet), Jack Ruby (Assassin), Vivian Leigh (Actress), "Woody Guthrie (
Musician), and "Che" Guevara ((Revolutionary), would all die. It
is also memorable because on April 15th 300,000 participants including
Prize-winning Novelists, Rock Stars, Hippies, Acid-Trippers, Rebel
Professors, Middle-Class Homeowners, and just regular folks would all
gather in New York City to participate in "The Summer of Love' a protest
of the Vietnam War. The Anti-War Movement drew over 300,000 people and embraced
young and old. That year; "Breathalyzers" were implemented in Britain, Amana
developed the 1st Microwave, 'Quartz' watches were offered for the First Time
and "Rolling Stone" issued the First Magazine featuring John Lennon on the
Cover. Billboard Magazine crowned Aretha Franklin the "Queen of Soul". She
sold more than one million copies of her album " I Never Loved
A Man" and released 5 Top Ten Hits including "Respect". Two 'radical' movies hit
the Box Office like a bombshell, "The Graduate" and "Bonnie and
Clyde". Both symbolized the change of lifestyle and substance of
serious American Cinema, as well as, the rebellious 'Baby Boomer Spirit'
that seemed to be prevalent everywhere. Dustin Hoffman is seduced on
screen by "Mrs. Robinson", his girlfriends Mom , topped-off with great music by
Simon & Garfunkel- all of which push that film over-the-top at the Box Office.
Followed by the Rage of Texas... Bandit's: "Bonnie & Clyde" played by
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunnaway who evoke the cheerful yet, true story
of these violent criminals. Though panned by some media ( 'New Yorker'
Magazine's Pauline Kael, for starters) the film slammed the Box Office like a
freight train breaking all grosses. China would detonate their First H-Bomb on
June 17th and the U.S. would retaliate by announcing year-end a new
Anti-Ballistic Missile in defense. Remember "Twiggy" ? The 17 year-old Cockney
(British) Model would take the fashion Industry by storm with a
bobbed-haircut and stacked, triple-rows of eyelashes. A figure like a bean-pole,
she exuded youth, high-school innocence, and knock-knee'd adolescence. Fickle as
the American Public is: She retired within a decade. 1967 would also be the year
of the 'Tet Offensive' in Vietnam. America would take a real 'hit' as 67,000
Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers carried out attacks against them all
across South Vietnam. American's were stunned. Viet Cong smuggled weapons inside
Saigon in flower pots and coffins- requiring the cooperation of 1,000's of
sympathesizers. A city called My Lai symbolized the Vietnam War's madness where
500 were killed. General Westmoreland requested 206,000 more troops and Lyndon
Johnson gave him 13,500. After 'speaking out', Johnson relieved Westmoreland of his Command.
Shortly afterwords, Hanoi agreed to attend Peace Talks in Paris. The U.S. lost
58,212 brave souls in that War, 153,452 were wounded and 1,711 are still
reported 'missing'. We salute and honor those Brave Men & Women.
There was a
reason General Motors produced it's 100th Million Vehicle this year.
They Made Great Cars! Most consider the 1967
model "The Finest Hour for Corvette".
Especially unique as the 1967 Corvette shouldn't even
exist. Built as a "hold-over model" Chevrolet had originally intended to
offer the "Shark Body" Style but, couldn't get past production problems so, the
1966 Corvette Stingray was quickly refined, washed over with a few
modifications, and released for one more year. Normally, when that happens a
catastrophe occurs but, in this case- the opposite happened. The car was
simply 'cleaned up'. The changes included a new oblong reverse light over the
license plate, revised/ smaller conservative louvers on the sides, most emblems
were eliminated including the 'flags' on the fenders, the door lock button was
moved, and (5) Bolt-Up-Wheels replaced the Knock-off's ( for safety reasons).
The emergency brake handle was moved to the center console and Vinyl was added
to the factory hard-top. The engine section was essentially unchanged:
you could still order from a broad range of 300 hp, 350, 390,400 but, now
instead of 425hp engine, it was bumped up to 435. When you ordered the "L-89"
option it jumped up to a whopping 560hp. The 1967 Corvette model also got a
one-year-only hood scoop treatment, complete with 'a color stinger'. Most folks
think that option was only available on Big Blocks but, it indeed was
offered for a very short time on small blocks as well (when G.M. ran out of
hoods). Additionally, the Vette got flat black rocker panels, Rally Wheels w/
Glamour Rings and dogdish hubcaps, replacing the full chrome Hubcap seen on
other years. Despite the fact, the Mr. General Public was waiting patiently in
the wings, ramping up for the "all new" 1968 model so, sales slipped to 14,436
Convertibles and 8,509 Coupes in 1967. Little did they know the 1968 model would
be a
horror
and the long anticipated
wait would all be for nigh. Whatever the reason, the 1967 is seen a The Most
Collectible :Mid-Year" Model. In fact. Most Corvette's built between 1963 and
1967 are often written about as a single series but, The True 'Vette Pet' Groups
consider the 1967 Sting Ray to be in a group all by
Itself.
