THE STORY
COPO is a Four Letter Word. By now, most of you know what those four letters stand for. Funny for us, as we carried the first one 11 years ago in our Showroom in Jupiter/ Tequesta, FL. Many folks would come in then and ask what a "COP- Oh" was (pronounced wrong)? We would explain that it stands for Central Office Production Order and it stood for something not only rare but, way, way too fast. To find a real COPO Camaro is the Holy Grail of many car collectors and investors. To find one that has been both totally restored and certified by a REAL, recognized, certification firm is like the difference between a diamond and a cubic zirconium stone. Well, here it is: A 1969 Chevrolet COPO Camaro. If you always wanted one but, couldn't afford the tariff for a totally matching number car- then you found one. Its history is complete, its restoration is total and its authenticity is documented by The COPO Connection and signed by it's original seller: Dale Berger of Berger Chevrolet. This is an actual COPO Camaro, stunning as new and in ready-to-covet condition. As related: COPO stands for Central Office Production Order which was the process used by Chevrolet (and other divisions of GM) for internal orders for limited production of non-standard items. The COPO process was actually used most often for mundane special fleet orders such as Police Cars with Cloth Interiors and Taxi's with special equipment (wheels w/ dog-dish hubcaps, V'8's with non-standard 2v carbs, etc) and didn't necessarily indicate a high-performance vehicle. But in 1968 and 1969, the process was also cleverly used to order 'special' High-Performance Options for Camaros /Chevelles and even a few Corvette's... that were otherwise not available as regular "RPO's ( Regular Production options). "C.O.P.O." Camaro's and Chevelles were meant to be real factory- supplied Super Cars. For the record: there were some options you couldn't order like a 427 /425 or 302/290 with Air Conditioning. GM refused, these years, to supply any of these with air conditioning because it was a solid lifter car. Despite what you may read on other sites or blogs.....a radio was an option ! ( One would suppose, so that while you were waiting in-line at the Drag Strip- you could listen to some tunes). Many of these cars were basically built as bare-bones race cars but, thanks to Berger Chevrolet, Chevrolet did offer "Double COPO's" which also carried a "Sportscar Package" ( Suspensions Modified & 140 m.p.h. Speedo) , D-80 Spoilers, Rally Wheels and yes, even radios. This car has undergone a total restoration, frame-off, to the highest standard. The car carries a Certificate of Authenticity from Ed Cuneen of the COPO Connection Inc. Now retired, there was no better known or respected authority on real, high performance Camaros than Cuneen. This car is not a clone, not a recreation, not some sort of Tribute. This is a real COPO Camaro. This car has an L-72 solid lifter, iron-block 427 cu. in., 425 horsepower Chevy V-8. The transmission is a Muncie M-21 4-speed and it carries the original factory "BE" 12 bolt 4:10 Positraction rear-end. It has J52 power disc brakes , D-80 Spoilers, Rally Wheels, AM Radio, Standard Bucket Seats, Endura Bumper and Vinyl Top. The original motor was most likely damaged and replaced early in the life of the car as the current correct "512" motor is born one week after the car. Don't be fooled by fancy rhetoric- a made up car is a made-up car. This IS an original COPO and we have priced it for what it is and isn't....representing it honestly.
