THE STORY:
In the World outside our country, trouble's
worsened in Northern Ireland while the Russians and the American's opened the
Salt I talks over Disarmament of Nuclear Weapons. Meanwhile at home, Chicago's
Weathermen vowed to "lead white kid kids into armed revolution", Nixon unwrapped
his Campaign Promise to withdraw Troops while all the time expanding the
bombing. But, in most people's memory the Big News for 1969 was at Max Yasgur's
Farm in Woodstock, New York. It was simply called "A
Celebration of Life and Music"
but, it
drew about 110,000 people. It turned out not to be just about the performers
(most of whom left by helicopter when done playing) but, about the attendees
themselves. Sanitation facilities proved inadequate, and steady rains turned the
Festival Grounds into a virtual
mud bath. Drug overdoses were
abundant. Yet, despite the appalling conditions, food shortages and herbal abuse
everybody just smiled, rolled in the mud and grooved on the whole affair.
(One memorable public address system announcement was: "......the brown acid
circulating now, is not very good"). The Concert featured luminaries like "The
Who", "Sly & The Family Stone", "Janis Joplin", "Jefferson Airplane", "Crosby,
Stills, Nash & Young", "Santana", "Arlo Guthrie", "Joe Cocker", "Canned Heat",
"Country Joe & The Fish", ...and many more. Sadly, the
Age of Aquarius
was at hand and this event was then followed by The Altamont Festival in
California. It was actually The Rolling Stones that threw a disastrous concert
at which a young black guy was stabbed to death by their own Security Staff, The
Hell's Angel's. Best Cult Films that year included "Easy Rider", "Butch Cassidy
& The Sundance Kid" and, one of the First "R" Rated Movies; "Midnight Cowboy".
Nov. 14th : 'The March of Death' brought 250,000 people to Washington while
later, 100,.000 marched in San Francisco. Dwight Eisenhower, Ho Chi Minh and
Joseph Kennedy (Sr.) all passed on that year, while Steffi Graf and Bobby
Brown came bopping their way into the World as Newborn's. Penthouse
Magazine came
into existence on the New Stands, The First Jumbo Jet hit the skies and The
First Automatic Teller was installed at Chemical Bank in New York. This was also
the year Sen. Edward Kennedy skillfully drove off the Chappaquiddick Bridge,
fleeing the accident, heartlessly leaving Mary Jo Kopechne to explore the creek
bottom.
If it could be said; in the
Sixties Automakers were more like 'Drama Queens' than today. They
quickly
responded to customers needs and wishes. Instead of delivering
dyed-in-the-wool , stamped out copies of what every one else was
building or making you buy stupid options you don't even need.... they actually made an effort to Design and Build cars to respond to
the Marketplace and you could order exactly what you wanted. Encumbered by only minimal Emissions Controls and costly Safety
Requirements, they supplied High Performance Cars that
exceeded all expectations.
Competing against Ford's Mustang, Chevrolet was only too happy to fill their
customers requests for Bigger Engines, More Horsepower, Better Custom Features and
Quality Design. The folks at Ford started to tremble even before Chevrolet
opened the barn door to release it's New Models. Despite Ford's offering their Mighty 289/271
V8, Camaro's 396/375 h.p. towered over the competition by offering more than 100
h.p. Plus, the Ford Mustang had to compete with two models; the Super
Sport and Z/28 with just one car.
By 1969 Ford
had to offer the Boss.
Today, when you stack the Ford Mustang against the Chevrolet Camaro in Quality
and (resale) Value - there's One Clear Winner...
Most consider the 1969 Model the Most
Aggressive and Handsome Body style of the First Generation Camaro's. The overall
proportions were the same as before- long hood - short deck but, the 1969 Camaro
was 2 inches longer and about 1
1/2
inches wider. This 'stance' made the 1969 model less 'pretty' but,
more meaty
then the 1967-1968 Models. The "Coke Bottle" Contour's were less pronounced and
two, new character lines ran horizontally rearward from the wheel openings. The
Shark Fin Simulated Louvers on the Rear Quarters were
All Show, No Go
but, they added more character to an already beefier body line. Chevrolet made
numerous other changes like moving the Ignition Switch to the Steering Column
(for steering wheel lockdown) and updating the Instrument Panel for starters.
The larger body opening made for more shoulder room and a few more inches hip
room for the bigger guys. Although no Cadillac Eldorado, the buyer on a
1969 Camaro could create a Luxurious Car if he wanted to. There were three
different Interiors, Air Conditioning and a host of Power options to choose
from. With it's new extra size and weight it was better suited for comfort
than previous models. With the Factory UAW Strike in full effect Chevrolet
experienced delays in getting the next heavily revised Camaro to the marketplace
so, the 1969 Camaro remained in production 3-4 months longer than usual... till
Nov. of 1969. This 'delay' helped establish the enduring mystique that will
stick with this car until time immortal. When you look at Chevrolet's New
Concept car that was released into 2008 production- there's only One Car it
resembles- .....the
1969 Chevrolet Camaro.
