1969 FORD MUSTANG SPORTSROOF "R" CODE 428 SCJ

In 1969, the Fastest-Car-Out-Of-The-Box available at your local dealer would be the Ford SCJ Mustang. You could choose from a lengthy list of Performance options and Models for your "New Mustang: but, the Top of The Heap would have to be the "R Code" 428 Super Cobra Jet . To help put things in prospective: FoMoCo built 299,824 Mustangs in 1969 (starting production in Sept. 1968) with 61,980 built as "63A" designated "Fastback Models". Out of those, only 5,192 received the Factory Heavy Duty Suspension, Beefed-Up Rear Axle & Con Rods,  External Side Oil Cooler and Trunk Mounted Battery. But, only 1,026 were equipped as Super Cobra Jet "R" Model Ram Air ("W" Code)  which carried the 428/360 h.p.V8 and the 4:30:01 Posi. 'Traction Lok' Rear. And, according to the coveted 428SCJ Registry only 146 are registered with the Engine/ Rear-End Combination !!  They were equipped with a Flat Black Shaker Hood Scoop and carried Nascar-Style Hood Pins, and Pop-Up Gas Cap. Our car is RARE for what IT ISN'T !!! . It is a bare-bones Street Racer finished in it's original color scheme of 'Candy Apple Red' with Black "Kiwi" Bucket Seats, optioned with only the FX: C-6 Heavy Duty Automatic, Power Front Disc Brakes, Dog Dish Hub Caps, Competition Suspension and AM Pushbutton Radio**. This car was featured in Mustang Monthly Magazine article's touting it's low-mileage & history. It has previous owner(s) stated mileage of 3,480 miles and comes complete with a Marti Report  testifying to it's original equipment. It carries original equipment even down to the Spare Tire, Jack, Side Oil Cooler, Door Tag, Fender Buck, Battery Inspection Sticker, Rear Seat Belt Covers, Interior. After researching the current market in the entire Country, we REDUCED and priced it to sell at $72,500*

  THE STORY:

1969 was a year when life in the States was more like a Psychedelic Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Neil Armstrong would land on the Moon while The Younger Generation would experience a technical reflection of the 60's Movement through "the Almost Mythical Happening...Woodstock",  a Rock Concert of Epic proportions. Life in the Sixties was indeed ever changing... "Stoned Out" and "Groovy". Richard Nixon would step-up his 'Secret Plan for Peace' in Vietnam at the Strategic Nuclear Party talks, which involved the Soviets and the U.S.A., in a plan for disarmament. At home in the States, Charles Manson would murder 5 socialites in Hollywood, while Roger Daltry and 'The Who' sang "Tommy" on the Radio, what-seemed-like, every 30 minutes. "The Brady Bunch" garnished almost gag-able Goody Two Shoes Status on TV while, on the opposite end of the spectrum, Larry Flynn would give Hugh Hefner a run for his money by releasing his new Soft (?) Porn Rag "Penthouse" to under counter Magazine Stands all over America. "Flying The Friendly Skies" the First Jumbo Jet would take travelers Coast to Coast in just 5 1/2 hours.. While in the clouds, you could listen to Top Singles like; The Fifth Dimension's "Aquarius/ Let The Sunshine In", Zager and Evans "In The Year 2525", The Beatles in "Get Back", The Archies "Sugar, Sugar" and Sly and The Family Stoned sing "Everyday People". "Marcus Welby, M.D." would feature kindly Robert Young (from "Father Knows Best" practicing medicine on TV . By The Fall of 1969, you would see the First Broadcast of Sesame Street" LIVE on your local PBS TV Station. If you spawned a youngster back then, "Bert & Ernie", "Big Bird" and 'The Garbage Can Grouch', "Oscar" would become part of your families daily vocabulary. Then again, who could forget Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson in the Cult Film Classic "Easy Rider"? If you wore your hair shorter you might have attended "Midnight Cowboy" starring Dustin Hoffman or "True Grit" with John Wayne.

Ford decided , by 1969, the Mustang needed a Major Restyling! They offered Five Different Models and even added a pair of "Bosses" to the mix by late in the year. Eleven engines and a host of options gave you the ability to Custom Build a Mustang for your exact needs: Grocery-Getter, Mom Mobile, Daytime Beach Cruiser or Night-Time Street Racer. The whole body package was a bit more PLUMP than previous models with the Vent Windows eliminated while Dashboards left BlandLand and became a lot more 'dramatic' in appearance. Prior to the Mach One being introduced you could order a bare bones Race Car in Fastback form. The Mach One would follow this model and would be laden with more Glitz to attract a larger buying base. Those would be billed "The Newcomer"..... gleaning off status from the Mach 1 Aircraft (the significance being the mythical ability to reach 750 m.p.h.- the Speed of Sound). Motor Trend gave the 428 SCJ's their blessing by testing the 3175 pound , 335 h.p. CSJ (not the 360 hp ) and achieving 0-60 in 5.7 sec and the Quarter mile in 14.3 / 100 m.p.h. (with the Automatic Transmission!). This test helped lend credence to the 428 Super Cobra Jet Legend ( known to burn-off a set of tires in one night, 440 lbs. of torque at the rear wheels didn't hurt the Beast either).  Four Speed gearboxes were Standard Faire while the FX Heavy Duty C-6 Automatic was an extra-cost option. All Cobras-Jet Mustangs coded as "R" Models came with  Ram Air and a Shaker Hood Scoop that protruded through the hood rocking back and forth- even when rumbling at idle. Built with the Drag Strip in mind, Ford Beefed up the bottom-end of the Big Block but, left the top-end undisturbed. The crank was made of Cast Hardened Steel / Lemans Rods were added and the engine was balanced externally by a large Vibration Damper. It carried a 9"-31 spline differential.

Finally let it be said, after a Drag Strip test Hot Rod Magazine declared the 428 SCJ to be "The Fastest Moving Pure Stock Muscle Car In The History of Mankind". As far as collectability that would spell  'Case Closed' for the 428 SCJ Mustang!
