THE STORY:

The R-107 body style had the largest and longest production run of any single SL body type in Mercedes Benz History. It experienced, and survived, an amazing 500% price increase from its inception in 1985 to its culmination in June of 1989. The first SL cost $10,540 and the last ('89) logged-in at $64,230.

It broke many records. It was the first two-passenger automobile to sell 200% above the price of the Cadillac and it survived the slump of the U.S. dollar and double-digit inflation in America still remaining on top in sales.

Despite it's hefty weight at 3,780 lbs. it is known for it's spirited performance.....Equipped with a 279 h.p. all alloy v8, it could hit 0-60 mph in 8 sec. with a top speed of 137 m.p.h. One reason this car was so popular was it was 'target marketed' to Baby Boomers with an expendable income in the $50,000 to $500,000 bracket. This occurred because the number of millionaires in America grew from 1972 through 1980 263%.... Millionaire status was achieved by an amazing 574,342 people. Incidentally, this same customer base also discovered the early  SL models at the same time as their sales also increased dramatically.

The 560SL meets and greets any expectations as a daily driver and it is written, in such great publications as the SL Market Letter, that most ownership is long-term  on these great cars. That is exactly why they are so hard to find with low-mileage. The 560SL model actually exceeded their original window stickers 10-15 years ago up till Mercedes finally offered another "beauty" and a suitable replacement in 2001. It was not uncommon for owners to buy and drive a 560SL for several years only to sell them for what they paid for it years earlier. Admittedly their value finally waffled in the early years of the New Millenium.... up until recently... now, they have turned the corner and have taken off again with many recent sales being swallowed up overseas. Another opinion is that with the Chrysler takeover (decline in new MBZ quality) these older Mercedes Benz’s will flourish in value. It is a great time to buy them as they will be sought out by collectors as "A True Mercedes". Finally, summing it up in a nutshell ......the 560SL's are known to be "extremely hearty cars". It is commonly known:

Used 560 SL's have satisfied more owners longer than any other marquee for resale value, quality and nostalgia.
