THE STORY:
The R-107 Body Style
had the Longest and Largest Production Run of any single
Body Style in Mercedes-Benz History. It experienced, and survived,
an amazing 500% price increase from it's inception in 1985 to
it's culmination in June 1989 ( The First 107 SL cost $10,540
and The Last, $64,230). Following on the Coat Tails of Inflation
and the change in European (Dueschmark) dollars to US Dollar........
it made for one,
cRaZy, 'Mr. Toad's Wild Ride'.
It broke many
records: It was
the First Two Passenger Automobile to sell 200% above the price
of a Cadillac and still survive the slump of the U.S. Dollar and
double-digit inflation totaling 300%...yet, remain Tops in Sales.
Despite it's hefty weight at 3,780 lbs. it is known for it's spirited
performance from a 279 h.p. Five Liter Alloy V8. It can
hit 0-60 m.p.h. in 8 sec with a Top Speed of 137 m.p.h. One of
the reasons this car was so popular was that it was 'Target Marketed' to Baby Boomers with expendable an income of $50,000
to $500,000. Another of the reasons for it's success was because
the number of Millionaires in the USA grew form 1972 to 1980......
an amazing 263%. Millionaire status was achieved by an amazing
574,342 people. Incidentally, (for the record) that same customer
base also discovered simultaneously the 'earlier' SL models (190-230-250-280SL
& 300SL) also jumped on the band wagon at the same time as
their sales increased dramatically.
The 560SL meets
and greets any expectations as a great Daily Driver and it is
written by many Auto Magazines that most ownership is long-term
on these great cars. The 560SL model actually exceeded their own
window sticker in resale value 10-15 years ago until MBZ finally
produced a suitable replacement in 2001. By all indications they
may be once again, on
the rise and the current times make a great
time to buy a really nice one. You'll find these for sale either
high-mileage & 'beat to death' or low-mileage babied and loved....... you just found the best one out there.
