PORSCHE SPEEDSTER 1600 SUPER 'BARN FIND'
WOW, THE 'BARN FIND' OF THE YEAR ! A REAL PRE-A PORSCHE SPEEDSTER.
EVEN RARER A 1600
SUPER MODEL, COMPLETE WITH ORIGINAL MOTOR, TRANSMISSION
AND SUPERIOR CONDITION BODY FOUND TUCKED AWAY IN THE NOSE OF A
GARAGE IN RUST-FREE CENTRAL FLA. THE SECOND OWNER (PURCHASED1971)
MOVED THE CAR HERE IN AN ENCLOSED VAN, 18 YEARS AGO, AND THEN
AFTER DISASSEMBLY PARKED IT. WE WERE TOLD ABOUT THE CAR, OVER
BREAKFAST, AT A LOCAL DINER AND WENT IN SEARCH OF THIS GREAT TREASURE.
THIS IS AN ESTATE CAR COMPLETE WITH ORIGINAL OWNERS MANUAL AND
TWO SETS OF ORIGINAL KEYS. THE MOTOR NUMBER IS CORRECT (P80050)
AND THE CHASSIS NUMBER (81134) SHOWS UP IN SEVERAL PLACES, INCLUDING
NEXT TO THE GAS TANK, TRUNK FLOOR, DOOR JAM AND THE TITLE. THIS
CAR CARRIES A FASCO (GLASPAR COPY) HARDTOP, THE ORIGINAL BEEHIVE
TAIL LIGHTS, BADGES, SIDE MOLDINGS, HEADLIGHT COVERS AND INTERIOR
WITH ALUMINUM SEATS. IT WAS AN ORIGINAL WHITE CAR WITH BLACK UPHOLSTERY
AND WHITE PIPING, AND OATMEAL CARPETS. THE BODY HAS NEVER BEEN
RUSTED AND ONE ROCKER HAS NOW BEEN REPLACED (DENTED). OUR RESEARCH
SHOWS THIS TO BE ONE
OF 304 SPEEDSTER MODELS BUILT IN LATE 1955 INTO
'56 AND ONE OF 109 616/2 1600 SUPER
MODELS TITLED IN THE USA AS OF 1956**. IT STILL RETAINS THE TOP SOFT BOWS AND 16 X 4.5"
WHEELS, PLUS; IT STILL HAS THE OPTIONAL PLEXI-GLAS WINDOWS, CORRECT
PADDED DASHBOARD AND LEATHER TIE-DOWN BELT FOR THE SPARE. WE JUST
MEDIA BLASTED THE WHEELS, FIT (5) NEW RADIAL 560 X16" TIRES,
TUNED THE MOTOR AND GAVE IT BRAKES. (PORSCHE 'AUTHENTICATION CERTIFICATE' DOCUMENTS
THIS GREAT CAR). OFFERS

THE STORY:
DR. FERDINAND PORSCHE
ESSENTIALLY DESIGNED A SPORTS VERSION OF HIS FAMOUS VOLKSWAGEN
STARTING IN 1950. IT WAS BASED VERY CLOSELY TO HIS V.W.'S PLATFORM
CHASSIS AND RUNNING GEAR WHICH INCLUDED A REAR MOUNTED, AIR COOLED
FLAT FOUR ENGINE WITH SWING AXLE SUSPENSION. IT GRADUALLY BECAME
MORE DISTINCT, MECHANICALLY STRONGER AND MUCH FASTER AS
IT AGED THEN IT'S PREDECESSOR EARNING IT'S OWN REPUTATION AS A
FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH. PORSCHE'S WERE ORIGINALLY ONLY OFFERED
IN A COUPE AND CABRIOLET BOTH HAD TWO-DOORS AND 16" WHEELS.
AN OPEN ROADSTER, CALLED THE SPEEDSTER, WAS ADDED LATE
IN IT'S FIRST PRODUCTION. TOTAL PRODUCTION FROM 1950-1955 WAS
ONLY 10,678 CARS. BY 1956 A CURVED WINDSHIELD, MORE SPECIALIZED
COMPONENTS AND A GREATER CHOICE OF ENGINE (MODELS) WERE ADDED.
PORSCHE EVEN OFFERED A RACE-BRED DOHC UNIT CALLED
THE CARERRA. WEIGHING IN AT ONLY 1800 LBS. THEY WERE PRICED FROM
$3700-$3950 NEW ON THE SHOWROOM FLOOR BUT, IN TRUTH DIDN'T FIND
MANY BUYERS. THE SPEEDSTER, ADDED IN 1954 FOR THE 1955
MODEL YEAR, FEATURED A NEW LOW SLUNG WINDSHIELD AND FRONT HOOD
HANDLE WHICH CARRIED THE ENAMELED CREST. A 3-PC ENGINE CASE REPLACED
THE OLD MODIFIED 2 PC VOLKSWAGEN ENGINE AND THERE WERE SEVERAL
MODELS TO CHOOSE FROM.(STARTING IN OCT. 1955) THE 1300, 1300 SUPER,
1500 GS, 1500GT, 1600 AND 1600 SUPER. IT WAS ACTUALLY PRODUCED
TO FILL THE BURGEONING AMERICAN MARKET WITH SPORTSCAR FEATURES
LIKE A REMOVABLE WINDSHIELD, LIGHTWEIGHT & REMOVABLE SOFT
TOP AND SIDE CURTAINS . TODAY, EARLY SPEEDSTER'S ARE SEEN AS A
SUPER-COLLECTIBLE ICON CAR OFTEN COPIED IN
KIT FORM, SOLD WITH NON-MATCHING MOTORS AND, INDEED, HARD TO FIND ORIGINAL AND REAL!.
