THE STORY:
This year would
be recorded in History as a rough year for America as unemployment
was high and the Average Salary was only $89.72 per week. America
was in the Space Race but, the New York Times would announce that
the U.S. Space Program was being hampered by cost over runs and
had fallen behind the Soviets. There was a tight Presidential
Race going on between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon not helped
by the Nations concern that Kennedy's Political beliefs might
be dictated by the Catholic Church. Kennedy would be elected
by a 0.3 percent margin..... one of the slimmest in History.
The animated TV cartoon "Flintstones' would have everyone
screaming "yabba. yabba doo" and the cartoon atmosphere
would carry into music with Larry Verne's "Mr. Custer",
The Hollywood Argyles hit "Alley-Oop" and Brian Highlands
"Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini".
Rock 'n Roll fans would get great news when Elvis was
discharged from the Army and he would release "Its Now or
Never" bumping Frank (Scooby-Dooby-Doo) Sinatra from
the Hit Charts. Alfred Hitchcock would write "Psycho"
releasing one of the most terrifying Horror Films of the decade.
Top Albums would be "Sold Out" by The Kingston Trio
and Elvis' "G.I. Blues". The Economy would turn around
by 1961 when the Kennedy's took office. Wrap-around Sunglassses
and Boufant Hairdo's would be replaced by A-lines , Mid-knee Skirts
and shorter haircuts ( inspired by Jackie Kennedy). But, if Fashion
wasn't your bag you could always retreat to your Black & White
TV Set and watch "Gunsmoke", "Wagon Train",
"Have Gun Will Travel" or "The Real McCoys".
Life was good In 1960.
There was only one
problem about building a Better American Sportscar after
1958. How do you make it better? 1958 is considered by many to
be a One-Year-Only-Body-Style, despite the fact... it is very
similar to the 1959-60 Models. '58 was the only year of the "Washboard"
Hood and Chrome Straps on the trunk but, by 1960 Chevrolet chose
to 'clean up' the body style and the Whole Series (58-60) is considered
more "Contemporary" than previous years. Gone was the
Pebble Grain Interior, starting in 1959 the Corvette got a Reverse
lock-out Shifter, and the 283 c.i. Engine grew to 315 h.p. with
Fuel Injection. Say what you will...this series is definetely
the "Last of the Classic Corvette" body. The Straight
Axle cars ride rough, have their own unique 'smell'
and sound like no other year Corvette. They are A
Breed Onto Themselves.
Though the hideous 2-spd. Powerglide Automatic and Power Windows
were still available, Power Steering, Power Brakes and Air Conditioning
were not. Only 10,261 1960 Vettes were made
that year and only a little over 300 in this Super Rare Color...and
speaking of Rare...here are the stats on the build of options:
Heaters: 9,808 equipped
Wonderbar Radio: 8,166
Windsheild Washer: 7,205 made
Clutch Type Radiator Fan: 2,711
Sunshades: 538 in Blue
Hardtop: 5,147
Two-tone Exterior Paint : 3,309
270 hp w/ 2-4 carbs : 2,364
4-speed Transmission: 5,328
Metallic Brakes: 920
If you're looking for a Matching Number, 270 h.p. Corvette
with Awards and something you can drive , rather than a Trailer
Queen- you found it. But, if your heart is set on P.E.R.F.E.C.T.I.O.N.-
than spend a few grand and make it back to flawless...
