THE STORY:

Despite the fact JKF barely sneaked into office in 1960, by 1963 he was adored by much of the Public. The White House activities were practically considered 'Life In Camelot' as every woman watched, not only the handsome president but, his comely wife.  The Country seemed , at least superficially, to be changing rapidly for the better.  With the Cuban Missile Crisis over... American's shook themselves out of the Depression and Life was Good once again. Top Record Albums were "Days of Wine & Roses" with Andy Williams, "In The Wind" with Peter, Paul and Mary, and comic, Allen Sherman, released "My Son, The Nun".  Annette Funnicello gave a memorable (?) role in the low-budget Movie "Beach Party" with Frankie Avalon, while classic comedian Jerry Lewis gave another classic 'slapstick' performance with Stella Stevens in "Nutty Professor". It was a Silly Year , giddy with excitement as the Economy slowly turned around.  1963 was also a Big Year for the Ladies as the Federal Government passed legislation requiring employers to give equal pay for equal work.  This would be the year Martin Luther King (who was actually considered, at that time, to be a trouble-maker) would give his "I Have A Dream" speech  to 200,000 Civil Rights Marchers in Washington. While, conversely, just 2 weeks later, a church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama would leave 4 young Black girls dead.  The giddiness would end, as the year came to a close Nov. 22,  when President John F Kennedy would be assassinated while riding in his Custom Made Lincoln Convertible. The clear bullet-proof top, which would have saved his life, was removed for the parade. Two days later, Lee Harvey Oswald would be shot by a Bar-Keep dying of cancer, Jack Ruby, in front of thousands of viewers LIVE on National Broadcast TV.  From November 22-25 regular network schedules would be canceled to broadcast coverage of President Kennedy's assassination aftermath. Silly Humorous TV programs like  "My Favorite Martian", "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" would return to the airwaves Nov. 26, officially ending the Nation's mourning.  Then again, maybe you remember the crazy "Hawaiian Punch" TV  commercials with the  animated character asking..." How'd You Like a Hawaiian Punch?", nailing his rival with a punch. Life Imitated Art so, children in school yards across the Country re-inacted the commercial by ' acting-out' the skit (today... there would millions in lawsuits).  American's could always return to a stupor as Malt Liquors were introduced, with 50% more alcohol , this year with Schlitz and Colt .45  becoming the sale leaders. If you had $5.95 to throw away, you could buy a 'Troll Doll' for Good Luck. Each came with Wild Hair, a Bright Colored Naked Body and lack of genitalia. Originally called "Dammit Dolls", Danish creator Thomas Dam, became an instant millionaire overnight. For me, 1963 had some highpoints & lowpoints- a series of 5 traffic tickets for 'chirping rubber' between gears in my 4-Spd., 348 Tri-Power 1958 Impala Coupe but, I also remember  just leaving college classes when the JFK murder was announced on the PA.. I remember Foxy Elizabeth Taylor in her role with Richard Burton in the blockbuster movie, released that year, called  "Cleopatra". It cost a record $37 million to make but, the controversy around the Stars Sex Lives created more hoopla then the actual Movie.

Another vivid memory was the emergence of  'Sports Cars" like this around the High School Campus and at College. Muscle cars were 'neat' but, GONE were The Day's of Ducktails, greased back 'sidewalls', Leather  Jackets, Fuzzy Dice, Laying Rubber at the Drive-In and Loud Motorcycles. There was a new popularity being gained by the guy's Playing Sports wearing Crew Cuts , Plaid Shirts, Letter Sweaters and driving Austin Healey's or Jaguars. In some cases , it seemed only the 'rich kids' drove them (the only one's whose parents could afford the college tuition). The cars were loud, flashy and seemed to shout out "Hey, look at me....you guys are losers!". Slowly, more and more kids traded in their GTO's and bought into The Latest Trend....European Sportscars. Maybe, it was the chance for The Average Joe" to appear " More Worldly"......but, whatever- they were here to stay.
