THE STORY:
Plenty of people were " thinking young" in 1964 as the Country's 2nd Leading Soft Drink, Pepsi -Cola aimed their product at the Pepsi Generation and "people who think young". Ford jumped on the bandwagon too... introducing the 1964 Mustang, initially advertised as "A Young People's Sports Car", while Pontiac designed it's First Muscle car... the G.T.O. Sports Illustrated created the soon to be sought after "Swimsuit Edition" but, Rudi Gernreich"s "Topless Swimsuit" didn't make the press deadline as Police Nationwide swore they would arrest any woman wearing one for "indecent exposure". Surfer's seized the sidewalks as the hideous Skateboard burst into popularity ( ever had your property damaged by these little weasels?). The Fab Four made their first appearance on Nationwide TV February 9th singing "All My Lovin", "She Loves You" and "This Boy" on the Ed Suliivan Shew. 'Beatlemania' had struck America !

Suddenly, there were Copycat Groups popping up all over Top 40 Radio. From the The Dave Clark Five, The Byrds, The Moody Blues, Peter & Gordan, Manfred Mann and, a half-dozen others, flourished during this year. Even Television capitalized on The Youth Movement by targeting younger audiences with 'silly' shows like The Beverly Hillbillies, Gomer Pyle USMC, Gilligan's Island, Bewitched, The Adam's Family, The Munster's and The Man From Uncle. On the serious side, Lyndon Johnson was nominated for re-election by the Democrats, while the Warren Commission released it's report on the Kennedy Assassination, Dr. Martin Luther King received the Nobel Peace Prize and Life Magazine covered the Vietnam War situation worsening. The G.I. Joe Doll was created to keep young males from playing with Barbie Dolls (?) [ Hasbro sold 2 million dolls the first year] and they even added a mean looking facial scar to add masculinity. By the end of the decade though, sales would plummet on the mean-looking little doll while American's showed their distaste for the Vietnam War. The Best Picture wasn't "Bonny and Clyde" (1967) or "Yellow Submarine" (1969) but, "My Fair Lady" and "Mary Poppins". Times were a changin'. American Bandstand and "The Swim" (dance) was popular, while Batman & Robin, Rocky & Bullwinkle were beloved programs on TV. By the end of 1964, the first real Curvaceous Car Movie would be released in " Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill" . Russ Meyer's bizarre tale of three Go-Go dancers raising holy hell with car crashes, judo chops and busty women kicking-butt across the California desert.

By 1964 ,Chevrolet has redesigned the Chevy again by separating the Impala Super Sport model into it's own series making the Impala Model the second most expensive Chevrolet in 1964. It proved popular as by 1964, one out of every four vehicles sold in America was a Chevrolet. Yet, finding an original, mint example today is like looking for a virgin in a Texas Whorehouse. This level of sales allowed record dividends to be paid to stock holders at General Motors. A $4.45 share increased 11% over 1963 stock. In total, G.M. paid $1.2 million in dividends- the largest ever paid by any company in America to date. There was good reason this car was so popular, It presented a Great Value ! Standard equipment on the Impala Model included, Extra Thick Foam Cushions, Bright Alum. Front Seat Panels, Bright Instrument Panel Insert, Electric Clock, Parking Brake Warning Light, Impala Emblem on Steering Wheel, Chrome-Backed Rearview Mirror, Front-Rear Armrests, Dual Dome Lights, Bright Alum. Garnish Moldings , Luggage Compart. Lights, Bright Accented Door Panels, Leather Grain Vinyl Headliner, and even Bright Door Window Glass Edges. The 230 cubic inch 6 cylinder was Standard Equipment with a 283 - 220 h.p. V8 optional at $54 more. The coveted 327 V8 ( 10.5 :01 compression) with "PowerPak" 4v carb was optional @ $95 extra and offered the perfect motor for Power and Efficiency. These cars offer a truly great ride and one quickly realizes why Chevrolet kicked butt on the competition in 1964. The 1964 Model proved to be One of the Most Beautiful, Simple Body Styles ever offered yet, many feel the 1964 Chevrolet is the Next Best Collectible to the 1957-58 Chevrolet. Summing up this car we remind you.....There's an old saying in the car business...."It's Only Original Once".
