THE STORY:

By 1966, if you were a " Nurd " you thought "turning on" was something you did with your TV Set and "Taking a Trip" meant a vacation in the Family Car. However, by years end both phrases took on a completely different meaning. Hipsters and Intellectuals alike were dropping acid, and taking mind altering drugs looking for a distraction from their hum-drum lives. Authorities across the Nation moved quickly to outlaw any Halucinagenics. Still College Professor Timothy Leary preached their benefits. Music took a strange twist with Nancy Sinatra's Mini-Skirt / Knee High Booted hit "These Boots Are Made For Walking", the Beach Boy's "Good Vibrations" and Frank Sinatra's "Strangers In The Night" (dubbee-dubbee-doo") songs that hit the Top of the Charts. A Summer motorcycle accident took Bob Dylan out of action despite the fact he was riding high on two big hits' "Rainy Day Woman" and "I Want You".
By this time The Warren Commission was studying the events of the JFK Assassination 3 years earlier... John Connolly (Texas Governor) would testify "....he was hit by a 2nd bullet" and throw the Commission into a tail-spin. 5,800 troops would die in Vietnam, with 39,093 wounded. The U.S.A. closed the year with 400,000 Troops in Southeast Asia.
Campy live-action Comedy (?) would cover the
Color TV Screen with "Batman and Robin". 'The Caped Crusaders', whose seemingly endless supply of villainous opponents, keep TV viewers glued to the screen with Animated Corn Pone. While on the Intellectual Side; Star Trek, well ahead of it's time, started building an audience of Devout Followers that endured to this day. Of course, one can't talk about TV without mentioning "Mission Impossible" with Peter Graves as IMF head "Jim Phelps". On The Music front: John Lennon would take flack after commenting that "the Beatles were bigger than Jesus Christ". This inspired countless Bible Belt burnings of Beatles Records, Memorabilia and Albums (which today make them even more valuable). Many fans never saw through the druggy lyrics of the albums "Rubber Soul", "Revolver" and " Yesterday...and Today". They were still the innocent "Mop Top" Boys from London.
Elizabeth Taylor would close the year with a Best Actress Award for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" but, it was Comedian Lenny Bruce who caught the biggest headlines by overdosing on heroin on Aug 3rd. A drug that wasn't even widely recognized here in America at the time. Harassed for years by The Guardians of Public Morality ...Bruce, was in reality the Era's Brightest Humorist... despite his Foul-Mouthed-Style and Wicked Social Commentary.
In the Automotive News: Growing from a Boxy, Underfed, Intermediate the 1966 Chevelle took on a Major Facelift this year and earned the right, for the first time, to be called a
Super Sport. Each car carried a 396 V8.... when in the past years the Chevelle SS could have been equipped with a lowly Six. The 396 SS was equipped with a much stronger Springs, Recalibrated Shocks, and Thicker Stabilizer Bars. The new Sport Coupes displayed a fresh roof line with deeper, flowing lines and a recessed or "tunneled" rear window that was a focal point for rust. Vinyl tops were added in Black or Beige. Bucket Seats were new.... thinner than the Corvair Monza seats used before, and were called 'Thin-Line Strato Bucket Seats". Despite popular lore, they were not Standard Equipment and, unlike past years, all Super Sports did not automatically receive them. You did get a Accented Domed Hood, Color Accented Lower Body Sills and, later cars got a Black Filled Rear Cove. All Super Sports came with plain Dog-Dish Hubcaps but, fake Mag Hubcaps were soon to be offered. Many folks added the popular Rally Wheels (offered in 1967) as a way to 'update' your older SS. You could choose from three-different motors: a 325 hp, the L-34 360 hp or the L-78 375 hp version ( only 3,099 of those were built). You could still get the 327-350 hp motor but, only on lesser models than the Super Sport. Even the Showroom Catalog declared; "If you have a taste for action, here's the satisfier". The Super Sport Badge continued until 1973 when things deteriorated so badly with Performance Cars that you could even order a Chevelle SS Station Wagon. The rest of this Story is history. Chevrolet reincarnated the Super Sport designation but, they can never bring back.... the ORIGINAL' Rat Motor' 1966 SS 396 Chevelle. This is a Premium Example.
