THE STORY:

"The Summer of Love" was declared in 1967 as Flower Power Children from all over America converged on San Fransisco. "Be sure to wear flowers in your hair".... sang Scott MacKenzie. It was the Capitol of the Hippie Sub-Culture, home of KMPX, the First Progressive Rock Radio Station, and the home of "Rolling Stone" magazine. Tourists would come to 'Frisco' just to capture a look at this new, hip sub-culture, hitching a ride on the "Hipppie Hop"...the Gray Line Transit that ran through Haight-Ashbury District. This was the year they held the historic Monterey Pop Festival. City Father's braced for the worst possible scenario but, were pleasantly surprised to find it drew a well-mannered, neatly groomed bunch of 'Flower Children', which just milled around the festival grounds peacefully . Organized by the "Mama's and Poppa's lead singer; John Phillips, the festival featured music by "Country Joe and The Fish", "Big Brother and the Holding Company (Janis Joplin)", "Moby Grape:, "Jimi Hendrix", "The Grateful Dead", "Quicksilver", "The Steve Miller Band", "The Who", and even, "Jefferson Airplane". Top 40 singles on the radio still reflected the conservative side of America with hits by LuLu ("To Sir With Love"),The Association ("Windy") and The Box Tops ("The Letter"). However, Best Selling Albums were not the Rolling Stones or Jimi Hendrix but, The Monkees, The Supremes and Bobby Gentry.

The Anti-War Movement found draftee's moving to Canada or Europe to avoid the draft or actively protesting in the organized demonstrations in New York City or San Francisco. This was the year for the Worst Race Riot ever in the USA. It took place in Detroit, killed 43 people and did $220 Million in damage. Outside the Pentagon, 647 people were arrested in Anti-War protests while over 17,000 soldiers died in Vietnam. Pontiac introduced the Camaro-like "Firebird", American Motors unveiled it's "Javelin" and Corvette issued the Last of The Midyear Vette's....to this day, some say it was "The Best One Ever !"

There was a reason General Motor's produced it's 100 Millionth vehicle this year. THEY MADE GREAT CARS. Most would consider this "The Finest Hour" for Corvette. Especially unique in history, as the 1967 Corvette shouldn't even exist ! Built as a"Hold-Over Model" Chevrolet originally intended to offer the "Shark" bodystyle in 1967 but, couldn't get past problems and production delays so, the 1966 Corvette Sting Ray was quickly 'refined' and offered for one more year. Normally, when this happens, a catastrophe occurs but, just the opposite happened. A legend was created. The refined changes included a new, oblong back-up light lens over the license plate, revised, conservative (small) louvers on the sides, emblems (for the most part) were simply eliminated, the door lock button was moved forward ( it is said, because it "caught on Zora Duntov's raincoat") and the "Knock-Off Wheels" were replaced by "Bolt-On " Wheels. The Emergency Brake was moved to the center console and a Vinyl Covered Hardtop was added to the roster of options. However, the engine selection was essentially unchanged. You could still get the base motor 300 hp or step up to the 350, 390, 400 or a 435 (instead of the 425). But, the strong of heart ( and wallet) ordered a 'L-89', 560 h.p. version. The 1967 even got an exclusive, one-year-only Hood Scoop complete with color 'stinger' (only offered with the Big Blocks). Rally Wheels with Glamour Rings and Caps replaced the old fashioned hubcaps and Flat Black Rockers replaced the polished alum. ones of previous years. Despite the fact, production slipped to 14,436 Roadsters and 8,509 Coupes, the 1967 Corvette is still seen as The Most Collectible today. In fact, most Corvette's built between 1963 and 1967 are often written about as a single series yet, the True "Vette Pet" Groups consider the 1967 Stingray in a group all by itself.
