THE STORY:
The "Summer
of Love" for 1967, was declared Nationwide as Flower Children,
all over America, converged on San Francisco. You were reminded
" to wear flowers in your hair by Singer; Scott MacKenzie.
'San Fran' was The Capitol of the Hippie Sub-Culture. It was also
the Home of KMPX, the World's First Progressive
Rock Radio Station and the Home Base of Rolling Stone Magazine.
Some tourists even came to 'Frisco' just to capture a look
at this new colorful subgroup hitching a ride on the "Hippie
Hop" Gray
Line Transit
that ran through
the Haight-Ashbury District. 1967 was the year rock promoter's
held the Monterey Pop Festival . Monterey City Father's braced
for the worst but, instead, this event drew a well-mannered,
neatly groomed, bunch of Flower Children which milled around peacefully
through the City and Festival Grounds. One of the Very First
Pop Festival's, it was organized by the Mama's and Poppa's
own; John Phillips. The event featured Country Joe and The
Fish, Big Brother and the Holding Company (featuring Janis
Joplin), Moby Grape, The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver, The
Steve Miller Band, The Who, Jimi Hendrix and even the original
Jefferson Airplane (before Starship). Top 40 Single's on
the AM (Monaural) Radio still reflected the Conservative Side
of America with hit's by LuLu ("To Sir With Love"),
The Association ("Windy") and The Box Tops
("The Letter") taking Top Spots on the Charts. Top Selling
Albums were NOT sold by The Rolling Stones or Jimi
Hendrix but, by The Monkee's, The Supremes or Bobby
Gentry (gag).
The Anti-War Movement
found "draft dodgers" actually moving out of the Country
to Canada to avoid the 'call to duty'...or protesting in organized
demonstrations in New York and San Fransisco. This was the year
of the Worst Race Riot ever in U.S. History. It
took place in Detroit, killing 43 people and resulting in $200
Million in damage. Outside the Pentagon, 647 were arrested in
Anti-War Protests yet, despite their efforts, over 17,000 soldiers
would die that year in Vietnam.
Pontiac introduced
it's Camaro-Like "Firebird" this year, AMC unveiled
the "Javelin" ( later used in a James Bond movie) and
Corvette issued The Last of the Sting Ray Body Styles.
To this day most folks agree, it was The Best One Ever !. This car may be One of a Million Reasons
General Motors was so successful, as they produced a record 100 Million Vehicles by year's end. In the Big Scope of Things: there's good reason for their
success. They produced Great cars! Most Corvette Collector's
still rate this car "Corvette's
Finest Hour".
Especially unique, since the 1967 Corvette shouldn't even exist.
It was strictly built as a "Hold-Over Model"
since Chevrolet had originally intended to offer the 'new' Shark
Body Style but, couldn't get past production problems in enough
time so, the 1966 Corvette Sting Ray was quickly 'refined' and offered one more year. Normally, when
this happens, it's catastrophic but, this time- the opposite
occurred. The refined changes included a New Oblong Back-Up
Light over the license plate, a more Conservative Fender Louver
treatment, the elimination of some Emblems, the Door Lock button
was moved, and "Bolt-On" Wheels replaced the problematic
"Knock-Off Wheels" (ie: knock-off spinner ~~~fall's
off = wheels air
born). The Emergency
Brake Lever was moved to the Center Console and a Vinyl Covered
Hardtop was added as an Option. The Engine Selection however, remained essentially unchanged.
You could still order from a broad range of horsepower : from
a 300 h.p. to 350small block, or 390 to 400 Big Block but now,
instead of 425 hp being the Top Dog, it was bumped up to 435....no,
make that: 560hp if you could get a L-89!
Then, there was
the One-Year-Exclusive: the Hood Scoop, complete with
'Color Stinger' (only offered with the Big Block Option) and,
the Flat Black Aluminum Rocker Panels. Rally Wheels with Glamour
Rings and Caps replaced the old fashioned (and out dated) Hubcaps
as Standard Equipment. The Big Spender could also get the new
"Bolt-On" Finned Aluminum Wheels ( $263.30 ), as Chevrolet
eliminated the Knock-Off's. Despite the fact production
actually slipped to 14,436 Roadsters and 8,509 Coupes,
the 1967 Corvette is still seen as The Most Collectible
today. Especially, if you can find a Convertible with correct
Factory Air Conditioning ( look for the vent in middle
of dash). Only 1,553
Convertible's made with AC! **. Most books speak of "Mid-Year Vette's"
as "1963 -1967", a Single Series but, the True Pet
Vette Groups consider the 1967 Sting Ray to be In A Class All By Itself !
