THE STORY:
By 1967, Jimi
Hendrix wanted to know "Are You Experienced?",
the Doors questioned your Boy Scout capabilities by asking you
to "Light Their Fire", TV's Laugh In wanted
you to "Look THAT up in your Funk and Wagnall".
If you were GROOVY you went to the movies to see Dustin
Hoffman in "The Graduate" or Clint Eastwood in
"The Good , The Bad, and The Ugly". If you were
really lucky you did all of this cruising in a 1967 Corvette...this
was considered the high life.
Few people disagree
that the 1967 Corvette stands in a class all it's own. Always
considered a lucrative investment car, the big Block Corvette's
are respected even more when they are elevated PAST the 390/400
h.p. option and launch into the RPO L71, L-88 and L-89 versions.
Surprisingly, 42.31% of ALL 1967 Corvette's were 427 cubic inchers
but, only 3,754 were 427/435 h.p. cars. Less than half of those
were convertibles.
The 1967 model
got additional cooling capabilities by adding another cooling
vent to the sides and a "Power Bulge Hood" with a forward
facing scoop that carried the "427" cubic inch
displacement badge proudly on each side. Few people realize there
were unique features, only relative to the 1967 model,
that set it apart from the others. For starters, this model would
be considered the 'cleanest, best designed body ever offered on
the mid-year series' ('63-67). Built as a 'hold-over model', while
the new ('68) Shark body-style was in production, stylists
determined that instead of covering the car with "a lot of
junk", they would simply eliminate all the glitz and build
it 'shorn' of any new emblems, scripts, fake air intakes, hardtop
vents,wild scoops or extra lights.
Sadly, somebody
in Washington legislated NO SPINNERS on hubcaps or knock-off wheels
as they must have either saw too many Gladiator movies or thought
James Bond would get a hold of one and cut somebodies legs off
with the twirling spinners. So, a last minute design, on an already
gorgeous wheel, yielded the new "Bolt-on Aluminum Wheel",
a master epic of design and detail. This little addition cost
G.M. and arm and leg but, was utilized once again on the Collector
Edition Corvette in 1982.
The 1967 Corvette
also got other unique features like tasteful, small side
louvers, the hand brake moved from under the dash to inbetween
the seats ( yowsir; NOW you could pull the brake up between your
girlfriends legs), a new hood scoop for big blocks (only), four-way
flashers, dual master cylinders, lane change signal lights,
six inch rims, larger interior vent ports, a new back-up
light over the license plate, interior design improvements and
folding-seat-back latches. Of course, we can't forget adding the
incredible, new 427/ 435 h.p. option ( w/ 20 L-88 "heavy
duty" 427's). Clearly, the 1967 Corvette can not only be
viewed as the Star of Stars" in the Mid-Year Vette Lineup
but, as a "Can't Lose" Collectible in any winners circle.
With the Stock Market fluctuating DAILY the 427/435 Vette will
be viewed indefinitely as a better investment than Blue Chip Stocks.
The only people who ever regretted buying a Big Block Corvette
are those that SOLD THEM ( especially the poor bastards that sold
them when the a 'new' 1968 Corvette was introduced. Here's your
chance to return to the Sixties again....
