THE STORY:

Neil Armstrong stepped down from his Lunar Lander onto The Moon, Big Bird stepped on Ernie on TV's new hit Seseme Street, Penthouse hit the racks, Monty Python's Flying Circus hit TV screens, and The Who became Rock Icon's when they released Tommy's "Pinball Wizard". It would be 'one crazy year' with " fewer troops but, more bombs" in Vietnam, Charles Manson would lead a pack of 'Hippies' to murder 5 in California, and Golda Mier became the 4th Prime Minister in Israel.

It wasn't too many years ago, that when we mentioned a "COPO Camaro" people thought you might be talking about a car owned by the Copo Cabana Club in Miami. But, thanks to magazine articles, The Internet, and TV Car Shows like "Dreamcar Garage", "Rides", "Car Crazy", and "My Classic Car" all the true facts about these great cars have been brought to light. We are proud to offer for sale another great C.O.P.O. Camaro. The former seldom known fact is now a well known published factoid that Chevrolet had two similar, but distinctly different processes for ordering Optional Equipment from the factory. The first was "Regular Production Options", commonly known as "RPO's" and the second was a "Central Office Production Order, which was kept pretty much secret except to the really large ( a.k.a. 'influential') dealers 'in the know' and, of course, individuals within the G.M. Corporation. This way, the hideous public ( that's you and me), were kept in the dark so, we couldn't walk into our local Chevy Store and order a 427 COPO. While the COPO cars have become famous, due to handful of rare, super secret, high performance options, in reality the COPO System was actually intended for just mundane alterations. The most common use by dealers was for Special Fleet Paint Schemes and alterations for Municipal Vehicles...like Police Cars and Taxi Cabs. Some models were ordered to included Heavy Duty Suspensions, H.D. Springs and, even Cloth Interiors. It is unlikely in 1969, any Camaro's became Taxi Cabs or Police Cars but, there is little doubt now, that this process was singled out to give the Camaro the hardware it needed.... to all but obliterate the competition. In this case, to build extremely High Performance Big Blocks.

Don Yenko Chevrolet really gets most of the credit for pushing Chevrolet into the COPO Systems as he forced Chevrolet to build the car - that should have built and offered to the General Public in the first place. It finally became the Most Powerful Camaro ever made! Chevrolet used two different code systems: No.9560, which included the Ultra-Exotic, grossly underrated h.p. ZL-1 Aluminum 427 and No.9561, which featured the all-iron 427 L-72 427. The 9560 cost an incredible $4,160 more than a base Camaro Coupe V-8, while the 9561 only cost $489.75 more. It featured a 850 cfm Carb, Hi-Rise Manifold, Rectangular Port Heads and Forged Steel Crank, that gave 11:01 Compression, and 95% of the ZL-1's power - at 1/10th the cost. In addition ,( if so inclined) one could also order C.O.P.O. Option #9737 which offered the "Sportscar Package". This consisted of Special ( Oversized; 15 x7") Rally Wheels / R.W.L. Goodyear Tires, G32 Heavy Duty Springs, 4:10 Positraction, 1" Heavy Duty Stabilizer Bars, Power Disc Brakes, Special Heavy Duty 'Curved Neck' Radiator, a ZL-2 Cowl Induction Hood, a 140 m.p.h. Speedometer and other miscellaneous goodies. However, in reality most of these cars were actually Race Cars so, if you see a fancy 427 COPO with a Console, Fiber Optics, Fold-Down Rear Seat, RS Hidden Headlights and X-33 Chrome Trim... it's highly unlikely it is real.

The COPO 9737 Package could have been called the 'Co-COPO' because Chevrolet records indicate that it was only available in conjunction with the other COPO Codes. It could never be ordered solo, or 'all alone'. Over the last 10 years, or so, it has become earmarked "Double COPO". Sadly, the 9560 was made in limited numbers and was hardly a car made for the Average Joe. The price made the car so steep it cost more than a new Corvette (priced at $4763). Therefore, many actually sat in dealers showroom's or on the back lot till they were 'deep discounted', just to get them off the premises. Surely more than one Sales Manager lost his job over stocking one of these.

Everybody crows about the Yenko's, as they are more widely recognized and well known for their bright color schemes, decals and lettered headrests. But, they are also in more abundance. The quiet (?) little Berger Camaro's and Chevelle's came out of a small dealership in Grand Rapids, Michigan and, like the Dana and Baldwin Motion Chevrolet's, they have their own cult following. Over half of the Berger's were Automatics as they were clearly used for racing. Now there only 12 4-Speed's Bergers left. Our car was shipped new to California and resided in Arizona where it belonged to Jim Loper, a famous Drag Racer. It is remembered as his personal 'driver'. It is also said, his tire tread marks still stain the streets of Phoenix, Arizona. This is a very original car. It was doc'd by The Man Himself: Ed Cuneen*, plus, the Berger's themselves. A truly Great Find and The Ultimate Collectible car.
