THE STORY:

By 1969, the Assassination of Martin Luther King, the Election of Richard Nixon, Elvis' "Comeback Tour" and the Governments imposing Stricter Emissions on Automobiles was all part of history. LOVE was in the air...Woodstock was "The Happening" Event that made Rock History. It brought together Vocalists, Artists & Groups like Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Sly and The Family Stone, Joe Cocker, Mountain, Satana, Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane...just to name a few. It was a time of "Happy Vibes", Peace , Love and Happiness...which seemed 'to last forever'.... another 3 years. If you remember "Moog Music" was "IN", with Johann Sebastian Bach making the Radio's Top Ten , with his hit "Switched On Bach". Followed by a deluge of Moog Music from Martin Denny, Moog Machine and Marty Gold. Synthesizers 'integrated' themselves into Rock Music. Top 40 Hits signaled the mood of the year with Fifth Dimension singing "Let The Sunshine In", Zager and Evans sang "In The Year 2525", The Archies crooning "Sugar, Sugar" and Sly and The Family Stoned barking out "Everyday People".. Big Bucks were made at the Box office when "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid" hit the screens propelling Robert Redford and Paul Neuman into millionaire status. "Midnight Cowboy" was no slouch either...a great movie, featuring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight. Surprisingly, it was one of the very first-to-be rated "X" movies.... sanctioned by the Motion Picture Association. The New York Jets winning ballplayer "Broadway Joe" Namath was now featured in nearly every magazine as the Epitome of The Late 60's Bachelor ...often seen 'club hopping' @ the latest nightclubs wearing Bell Bottoms, Rows of Gold Jewelry & Medallions topped by a untypical scruffy beard. By 1969, news reporters would accuse a U.S. Infantry Unit, led by Lt. Robert Calley , of committing homicide of an entire South Vietnamese Village at Mai Lai. 450 people died March 1968. Though U.S. deaths in Vietnam numbered 33,461 while Nixon proposed an "8-Point Plan For Peace". Sweet Sorrow as the Nations Candy Manufacturers follow Hershey's lead by doubling the price of nickel candy. All this ...and More happened in 1969.

No one really knows what makes the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro One Of The Most Popular Muscle Cars of All Time. Perhaps, it's the one-year-only- styling, or maybe the multitude of different variations the car could be built in, or maybe it was the perfectly sculptured body or, the list of 18 totally different colors one could order the car in but, many believe this car was The Birth of A Warrior.... both off and on the Track. It also is remembered for it's position at the Top of The Heap amongst the Fastest Camaro's, as no other year had so much muscle available over the counter or from the RPO Order Book. You could choose between Plain Jane' X-11s, Super Sports, Z/28's, Rally Sports (combinations of both), Indy Pace Cars or COPO 427's. You could get 4-Wheel Disc Brakes, Chambered Dual Exhaust, Dual Crossram Carburetors, Functional Cowl Induction Hoods, (Corvette) Rally Wheels, 302 Race-Bred Engines, Aluminum Heads for your 396, Heavy Duty M-22 4-Speed Transmissions and even F41 Racing Suspensions.. It was all available in one gorgeous body that featured a long hood and short deck. The 1969 Camaro was 2 inches longer and 1.5 inches wider then their predecessors. This gave it a more aggressive stance. Definitely "meatier" that the 1967 and '68 versions. Simulated Louvers on the Rear Quarters were more show than go but, buyers loved that "Shark Gill" Look. The Optional Console "Special Instrument" Package gave drivers the Gauges they had been demanding. Under the hood you could choose from a lowly 140 h.p. Six , to a 210 h.p. 327, a 307 cubic inch V8 to the Race Bred 302 DZ Motor to a 350/255 h.p or 300 h.p. version. At the Top End of the Pile you could order a 396 / 325hp, 396 / 350 h.p., 396 / 375 hp or the L72 427/425. If you had a 'in' at the factory , you would even get a 427 Z-11 aluminum motor ....which peaked well past the advertised 430 h.p. to 500+h.p.

Although not a Cadillac Eldorado, a Camaro Buyer could create a Luxurious Cruiser better suited to comfort .....or build a "Speed Racer" better than any other previous model. Even the interior was available in three different variations: Standard, Custom or Special Deluxe with a Houndstooth Pattern. In all fairness to Automotive History: Chevrolet did sell a record number of Camaro's in 1969 but, it was actually due to a prolonged UAW Strike, plus an extended Model Year , which kept them from building "The All New" 1970 Model ( the 1970 Models were not released until Feb. 26, 1970 !!!). The "New" 1970 'Maserati' body style endured a 12 year run but, in doing so, it subsequently lost a lot of luster. Not so with the 1969's. They stand apart, then and now, as part of an enduring Mystique...kind of like the 1957 Chevy. With the recent demise of the Chevrolet Camaro Marque, it will always be part of American Automotive History. Hence it's re-confirmation as One of Americas Milestone Cars .
