THE STORY:
The Biggest Most Talked About News for 1969 wasn't what you might
think: the alleged slaughter of 450 villagers at My Lai in Vietnam
by Lt. William Calley but, the fact that Max Yasgur donated the
use of one of his cow pastures for a 'Festival' planned for' August
15th, 1969. Promoters hoped for a turnout of 100,000 people (
@ $5 per ticket) but, were shocked to witness over 4 times that
many converging on the Festival Grounds. After trying to hold
back the mob for hours , and people sneaking in over the fences,
they finally threw up their hands in disgust and declared a "Free
Festival". This concert turned out to be legendary because
of the artists appearing over those 3 days: Jimi Hendrix, The
Who, Sly & The Family Stoned, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane,
Crosby,Stills, Nash & Young, Joe Cocker, Canned Heat, Richie
Havens, Mountain, Country Joe & The Fish and Joan Baez. Not
only was Music Legend created but, appearances there bolstered
the performers careers ten fold. It was captured on tape, film,
vinyl and in peoples heart's for years to come. In the end , it
wasn't about the performers as much as it was about the 400,000
people that came from all over the United States to be there.
The sanitation facilities provided less than adequate since
it was created for an audienceless than 1/4 the size. When it
started to rain, naked bodies & drugs abounded. With food
shortages and lack of water, what could have been a mini-disaster
turned into a happy
occasion as people
pitched in together, rolled in the mud and grooved to the
Great Music. With todays (C) Rap Music and Heavy Metal Screaming
Rock, it makes you wonder if given the same circumstances, it
would haved turned into a blood bath. Only 2 fatalities occured.....
neither of them from violence ( 1 ) an overdose, (1 ) a tractor
accident). Top singles for 1969 were "Let The Sunshine In"
The 5th Dimension, "Get Back" The Beatles, and "Everyday
People" by Sly and The Family Stone. The most Memorable Movie
that year would probably be "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance
Kid ", with the "X-Rated" "Midnight Cowboy"
coming in 2nd (the first major motion picture studio to
be rated so). For the hardcore cult movie buff: the low-budget
"Easy Rider" with a younger Jack Nicholson and Peter
Fonda. Ted Kennedy won't be forgotten for this year's Chappaquiddick
Scandal, the first withdrawl of troops from Vietnam's 543,000
peak but, the New York Mets won the World Series in a 'Cinderella
Season'. "Paul is Dead" was the rumor about The Beatles,
after John Lennn sang "I Buried Paul" in Strawberry
Fields Forever". By this time the slogans were "Flower
Power", "Don't Trust Anyone Over 30",and "Save
Water, Shower Wth A Friend". Anti War Protesters chimed in
chanting: "What do we want (peace).... "When do we want
it?" (now). Best new cartoons were: "The Rocky and Bullwinkle
Show" ,"The Flintstones" and "The Jetsons".
Howard Cosell had "The Super Bowls" and Best CrimeTV
Shows were " Alfred Hithcock Presents", "Mod Squad",
"Dragnet" and "Perry Mason". Fashion saw the
rise to the "Unisex Look" Bell-Bottom Pants, Tribal
Leather Vests, Love Beads, Psycheddilc Tie-dyed Shirts, Shaggy
Hair, Afros and Military Clothes. This was the year Mario Puzo
wrote the book "Godfather" which would later become
a hit (cult) movie. It was a year of prosperity but, quiet indignation
as American's grew tired of the war.
It's no wonder Chevrolet will introduce the all new Camaro Concept
Car into production in 2007. It's a dead-ringer for the
1969 Camaro. Easily the Next 1957 Chevrolet in collectibles. The
Z/28 epitomizes that look . The Ultimate Muscle Car of the Sixties.
By now you all know the Z/28 story and just why it is sought out
as the Pivotal Chevy Muscle Car. It wasn't just the mean and
lean look of the Lemans Stripes but, the Performance History
on this model that makes it 'a keeper ' for any collector. As
you've already found out : they come priced from $28,000 to $200,000
depending on equipment , original motor, condition, mileage and
whether it's a Rally Sport version of the ' bug-eye'. Since they
were only offered in 18 colors (plus a few special order colors)
finding one "loaded" is a near impossibility. Most Dealer
orders carried only the Standard interior, no Cowl Induction Hhood
and the base X-77 package (if it was a Norwood Ohio car). Since
most Z/28's are barebones.....one has to be careful to
buy a " real one' as opposed to a made-up car. Best to buy
a few Camaro Recognition Guides and acquire knowledge before
you launch into your search. Since there was a UAW Strike that
year some normal build traditions cannot be transposed to the
Camaro's (like the' 3-month- engine- build- date' rule). Z-28's
could be built new with four different 302 blocks and one
needs to do some homework before signing the check. Since resorations
vary in intensity and quality you need to study your purchase
before committing.
This is a car that can vary $40,000 in price for the very same
kind of car... just on quality & numbers alone.
N.A.D.A. Guides rate these cars (Recent 2006 Book ) at $21500
(low) to $39,800 (average) to $72,600 (high or exc.). That alone
should give you an idea what you're up against. This car is a
very good buy.
