THE STORY:

If you ever read the autobiography of one of our 1969 Camaro's you"d know that this year was a Very Memorable Year for both America and the Auto Industry. As conservative as the 1969 Camaro was the 1969 Corvette was bodacious in looks. Almost an extreme in 'Rocket Design'. While Neil Armstrong was announcing "One small step for man and one giant leap for mankind" the Woodstock Music Festival was taking place, Seseme Street, the Educational Childrens TV Program, was just getting started and Tiny Tim would sing "Tip Toe Through the Tulips" to 'Miss Vicky'.The Age of Aquarius was sqwelched by the death of what had to be one of the few Black People to ever attend a Rock Concert, when the Rolling Stones threw a disatrous Concert at Altamont Raceway. The Motion Picture Assoc. of America would institute the Rating System and "X" would be the forbidden (movie) fruit for anybody under 18 years of age. "Easy Rider" would become a Cult Film and star our favorite Jack Nicholson" in a leading role as "Captain America". War Protestors were just getting revved up while Richard Nixon began his string of lies with an "Eight Point Plan for Peace" in Vietnam...while the Beatles sang " Get Back" (the Years Top Single) by October of the following year Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin would be dead. After their death, Elvis would protest the use of illicit drugs in America with a bizarre 'unannounced visit' to the Whitehouse to have President Nixon award him his very own D.E.A. Badge. Who would guess that just 8 years later he would die of a drug overdose?
Chevrolet built 22,129 Corvette Coupes in 1969 with a base sticker price of $4,763.00. They sold more Coupes and Convertibles that year due to the fact one could remove the T-Tops and pretty much have a convertible. Despite the fact Leather was only a $79 option, only 3,729 Corvettes actually were blessed with the option from the factory. It's no wonder many folks had it added later. Since just about everybody knows the 1968 was The Worst Corvette Built, due to the factory rushing into production, the Critic's would have a Field Day picking at it's flaws. "Car and Driver" actually proclaimed the 1968 "too shabby to merit testing" which sent shockwaves through General Motors. By 1969, quality problems attacked and reduced to the nubbies Chevrolet eliminated the pinching, thumb button/ depression plate on the doors, dropped the separate back-up lights (integrating them into the tail lights) and the fibre optics were improved. Chevy increased wheel width from 8 to 9 inches and the steering wheels were reduced from 16" to 15" making entry / egress somewhat easier. Both Small and Big Blocks continued but, only two ZL-1 427 Racing Engines found their way into any 1969 Corvette. Those that knew Bill Mitchell ( he lived near me in Lost Tree Village/ North Palm Beach) he was a Shark Body Freak who even drove his own version of this car with small shark fins on the tail end. This body style is loved and hated by many but, has recently found favor with many Post Baby Boomers. If you want a 'great little driver' , you just found it.
