THE STORY:

Nineteen Hundred Sixty Nine was a year that resembled a road trip in a Psychedelic Time Machine. it was a year of wacky events from Neil Armstrong landing on the moon to the Technicolor Reflection of the 60's, in the almost mythical "Happening" called, "Woodstock". Richard Nixon stepped up his "Secret Plan" for Peace in Vietnam at the Salt One Talks (a strategic nuclear party involving the Soviets and the U.S.A.) attempting to negotiate disarmament...while Roger Daltry sang the Rock opera "Tommy", Charles Manson murdered five Hollywood socialites in Los Angeles, Ca. On the lighter side, The Brady Bunch made you gag on TV, while Penthouse went on the magazine stands, for the first time, resulting in many guy's 'choking their chicken' in the bathroom. Meawhile, the first Jumbo Jet hit the skies.

"Bunkie" Knudsen got the axe upstairs at Ford while, for the first time, added new models to the Mustang line-up. With competition at an all-time high, Fomoco released 5 different Mustang models including the Grande notchback hardtop (bargain basement model w/ T-Bird Luxury) and the Mach One Fastback (officially named the 'Sportsroof') which replaced the Top-of-the-line GT Model. List priced at $3,122 the Mach One came standard with a 351 Windsor V-8 / 2V carb @ 250H.P. but, options included the 4V/290 H.P. and a 390 big block for another $100. The top of the heap was the 428 Cobraj Jet 335 hp but, you could get a Ram-Air version for another $357. Only the Ram Air included the "Shaker Hood" attached to an air cleaner that actually vibrated & poked it's way through the hood. Part of the package was Flat Black paint and Hood Pins. There was also a Stripe Kit and model call-outs on the side. A Pop-up Gas Cap, Steel -Styled Chrome Wheels Wood Grain inserts on the dash, Dual Exhaust with Quad Tips and Interior Badging made the Mach One an immediate hit with consumers. The big engined Mach One's were capable of some pretty impressive power. They made 72,358 Mach One's but, only 13,193 had the big block, six oil quart 428 and only a few Ram Air versions were ever issued.

Developed by Ford's Light Vehicle Power Train Department, under Tom Feaheny, the Mach One was one of the Worlds Fastest Cars at the time. This application was thoughtfully combined with a Super Tuned Suspension by engineer, Matt Donner, who used the basic 1967 Heavy-Duty race car set-up...mounting one-shock-ahead-of-the-rear-axle, and one behind. Result was: a street machine that handled like a Trans-am racer. The big engined Mustang handled with final oversteer but, the rear was totally controllable w/440 lbs. of torque. The first bunch of cars were built strickly for drag racing. Wheel hop was dampened out by the aforementioned design with Polyglas Goodyear tires strapped on to give "tire bite". The typical 428 Mach One Cobra Jet came out of the factory doing the quarter mile in 13.5 sec, and 0-60 sec in 5.5 sec. Our car held the National Record for 16 months (starting in the spring of 1969) at 11.34 sec. at 134 M.P.H. and was actually featured in Hot Rod magazine in the early Seventies.

This car was delivered new on Dec. 28, 1968 from Beach Ford in Virginia Beach for $3,300, built Dec. 5, 1968 at the Muetchen, N.J. plant. The car then sold, in 1982 to a Norfolk resident with 9,200 miles, for the same exact price as was paid new. This owner got transferred to Ca., in the military, selling the car, with 18,000 miles on the odometer, to a resident in Livermore, Ca. who stored the car for 10 years in an airplane hangar. It then sold with 18,544 miles to a Fla. resident who issued the car title to us. A great , restored, time piece in SHOW CAR Trailer Condition...priced to sell at $44,500.
