Fashion in 1970
had no rhyme or reason to it. While both sexes wore tie-dyed
shirts, Uni-Sex Bell-Bottoms and Vintage Military attire (thank
the Beatles and the Vietnam War) women took to wearing Granny
Dresses, or Hot Pants...even shorter than the previously coveted
"short shorts". They were often made of suede, velvet
or covered with patches. The top rated movies varied from the
First disaster film "Airport" to the tragic love story, ingeniously
called, "Love Story". While " Woodstock" and
Santana's "Abraxas" topped the record charts
Jimi Hendrix would choke to death on his own vomit and Janis Joplin
would die of an overdose of heroin on Oct. 4th. The most Notorious
Car of the Decade would turn out to be Ford's Pinto, known as
'Instant barbecue' when hit , even lightly, in the rear end. Numerous
lawsuits prevailed against FoMoCo but, they managed to pull themselves
out of the fracas without bankruptcy.
1970 was the year
Oldsmobile completely re-skinned their cars and scheduled the
next re-design for 1972 but, a Steel Strike prevented them from
building the Next Generation Olds until 1973. This particular
body style is viewed as one of " Dr.Oldsmobile's" best.
The factory brochure sums up the story on our car, as
follows: " The
Cutlass S W-31 is like having two cars for the price of
one. Because the W-Machine is equally at home in all around street
use or off-the road service. The W-31 package, available in Cutlass
S or F-85, includes Special 350 cubic inch "Cold Air"
V8 with 'select fit'
parts, lightweight functional
Hood w/ Air Scoops, Big Hood Stripes, Chrome Tie Downs and Low
Restriction W-25 Air Cleaner. Performance calibrated 4v Carb,
High Overlap Cam, Manual Disc Brakes, Power saving Clutch Fan,
Lightweight Aluminum Manifold, Reduced Body Sound Deadener, Two
Sport Styled Mirrors, G-70 Glass Belted Tires, Heavy Duty FE2
Suspension, Full Dual Exhaust, Special Paint Stripes, and Diecast
The W-31 package was a bargain at only $321 new. The W-31 was
set directly against the competition, like the GTO, but, offered
a much better buy for the buck. Good planning , on the part of
Olds, as it provided unquestionable performance at a level way
below the normal High Performance Insurance rates in effect at
the time...despite the fact the motor put out way more
than the rated horsepower claimed. Even factory sales bulletin's
stated "surround your 4-4-2's (on the showroom floor) with
the Cutlass S, Rally 350, Cutlass Supreme and Supreme SX...remember
, you have a car that appeals to everyone".
With the deimse
of the Oldsmobile marquee' and the 4-4-2's finally taking
off like a Rocket (no pun intended) the Rallye 350, Cutlass
S and Sx are guaranteed to follow suit. A great handling
Performance Muscle car that signaled the end of an era.
