The dictionary defines 'watergate' as "a device that holds back water" but, it was the Watergate Building, an apartment and office complex, that held the Democratic Headquarters in Washington, D.C., that was the focus of the big brew-hah in 1972. This was the building that was broken into by President Nixon's own Advisory Staff. It eventually proved his undoing. Richard Nixon was the First President in History to resign his office. Another factoid: his succesor, Gerald Ford was never elected President or Vice President. Nixon picked Ford when Spirew Agnew resigned and Ford replaced Nixon when he resigned. Women's Liberation was taking hold this year as Gloria Steinheim managed to be in the news almost daily. Real headlines for the gal's came though when Burt Reynold's was published nude, as a first-time Male Centerfold, in the Magazine "MS.". Rolls-Royce Bolt-Up Grilles and Wide Whitewall "Gangster' Tires were "In" as the film "Superfly" was released. It stared Ron O'Neal, as a Nattily Attired Pimp& Coke Dealer, and became the Big Summer Hit at the Movie Houses. While Linda Lovelace proved to be another kind of screen idol, and the focus of every male water cooler conversation in her X-Rated movie "Deep Throat". Television scored big with viewers as 'The King of Kool', Arthur Fonzerelli ("The Fonz") swept the Neilson Ratings on "Happy Days", while "Archie Bunker and his predjudicial antic's on "All In The Family" kept us all laughing. "Salsa" wasn't just for eating: by the 70's, it became the new Spanish Dance in Latin Music. Rooted in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Africa, immigrants brought this sassy style of Latin music to communities all over the United States. Punk Music also made a big splash this year with group's like the B-52's, which used high tech synthesizer's and electric guitars to blend Pop with Punk. Top Album's were "Chicago V", "Honkey Chateau" with Elton John, and "America" by America. CD's were not even invented yet, but the talk of the town was VD, the sexually transmitted disease. It began to 'catch on' as 100,.000 new cases were reported in 1972. Shoes got funkier and chunkier as 'Platforms' became popular. 'Clogs' made you taller but, Earth Shoes held your heel lower than your toes. 1972 was a banner year for Shoe Sales, as well as, TRUCK sales.
Clearly, Chevrolet Trucks built between 1967 and 1972 remain the most popular... by far.. amongst collectors, partly because they were so popular when they were built new. Like the 1957 Chevy, these trucks, even 30 years later, are considered the Most Attractive Chevy Trucks Ever Made. Even Chevrolet's own advertising copy stated "The most significant cab and sheet metal changes in Chevrolet History". It was Clean, Crisp, and Classy. The Fleetside cab and bed were designed more integrated than ever before. But, this truck's appeal goes even deeper than sheet metal. The cab was moved closer to the ground and a few inches further forward on the frame. This enhanced the long low lines and made it easier for occupants to enter and egress.....Not to mention it lowered the center of gravity and aided handling and ride. Chevy had started making their trucks 'more like cars' starting in 1967, by adding 'car options' like Bigger Motors, Bucket seats, Chrome Pedal Trim, Plush Carpeting and Fancy Interior Trim . By 1968, you could choose from 4 - 5 different motors and by 1972, even choose Chevrolet's Most Popular Motor ever- the 350 V8. Emerging in 1967, the CST Series offered a flashier PIckup with Full Chrome Bumpers, Brighter Trim Packages and Upscale Interior Packages .... When the CST Series was eliminated in 1971, it was replaced by the coveted Cheyenne Series.
Chevrolet offered the 'Cheyenne Package' as the answer to those that desired a pickup and passenger car combined. Chevrolet was the first to offer Front Disc Brakes on all Light Duty Trucks as an option. By 1972, you could order a Super Cheyenne Package with extra interior trim and a 'jazzed up' interior. This ran the gamut from Wood Grain Dashes to Flashy Interior Fabrics, like the Houndstooth Pattern or Embossed Leather-Like Bucket Seats. The headliners were trimmed with 'Chrome' (stainless, actually), Leather (like) Embossed Door panels and 25 Exterior Paint Choices which included Two-Tone paint Schemes. Colors ranged from "Adonis Yellow" to "Walnut Beige" to "Matte Black" to "Clemathis Blue" ( Obviously, they put a woman in charge of picking names). Chevrolet offered 16 different Fleetside Models on 3 different chassis, plus the old tried and true, Stepside. Most models came with a choice of 2 or 4 wheel capabilities. And, you could choose between two different Six Cylinder motors and 3 different V8's..... the 307, 350 and gas hungry 402.
According to Department of Commerce Reports, about 63% of the entire 1972 American Work Force Truck population, consisted of Pickup Trucks. Truck sales took 20% of the sales pie away from auto sales for the very first time that year and by 1973 sales would break 3 million. Trucks were on their way to being the predominant transportation in America. Today, they own the road. For collectibility, the 1967-72 CK Trucks lead the parade. Especially, if loaded with optional equipment. Of the 365,778 C-10's built in 1972, only 31,416 had Bucket Seats, 62,137 had Tilt Steering Column's and only 40,636 had the Cheyenne Option (no stat's available for how many 'Super' Cheyenne models). Shortbeds and 2-Wheel Drive Trucks have traditionally been more popular but, you can always add factory accessories, or customize your truck with modern components to make them more desirable..( but, in the Collectible World ; remember original is Top Dog). The Top-Of-The-Line Models will always be in more demand and the Fleetside Models will always be more desirable ...despite the fact, Longbed Stepside sales totaled only 3% of actual production and would be rarer. Since this was the first year Chevrolet saw fit to go overseas to buy the now defunct, compact LUV Truck Series, ( in reality an Izuzu) that becomes just another reason to seek out a collectible, Full Size American Chevy Truck ! If you ever wished you bought one new in 1972- this is your chance...
